Day 87 of 182 (7 of 14 Korea)

Woke 6am after a decent 11 hours sleep (t’was the Sun & hills)…Joe & Sam suspicious Soya Milk & ‘whatever-Heidi-can-find-breakfast-cereal’…Brad scores extra breakfast!…nice efficient campbreak and bike load (sadly, still lots of cajoling needed for 7 & 9 year olds)… wearing thin wool tops…crisp morning freshness…magpies nesting…cherry blossoms…Spring well under way…morning haze promising a scorcher later…
Cycle deviating from safety of Friendly Blue Line cycle path to buy onigiri for lunch…but first put fluro’s on protection against circling Big Black Tinted Window cars…OECD first world countries regularly ranks Korea one or two highest Car-Pedestrian Fatalities…we can tell you why: complete disregard of traffic signals of all types, big expensive cars have priority (unlike Japan where pedestrians and cyclist treated with respect and given priority)…tinted windows make eye-contact impossible (useful for drivers constant use Smart Phone undetected)…pedestrian crossings close to shops additional parking… pavements convenient extension of the road…one even chased Brad along the cycle way…
…while Heidi in shop Brad secures panniers podstraps and tightens brakes (yesterdays hill descent took toll on brake pads)…continue following Paint By Numbers cycle path (allowing two abreast cycle and chat)…Two snakes sightings on cycle path (goodness knows how many we NOT seeing)…possibly few Asian Giant Hornet sightings…buddhist temples…intensive farming polytunnels…wild ginseng foragers…wide meandering Nakdanggong River…happy holidays rural korea…
…first signs approaching Daegu increased number of Bank Bandit Bike Bling (repeat 5 times fast) ..some shout what could be either abuse or encouragement (without a face its difficult to tell)…High Rise mushroom clusters in distance signal turnaround point of our OUT-AND-BACK Korean cycle tour…
But first: Find the Pink Motel…a few map disagreements but eventually we arrive early afternoon in a darkened lobby and are given complimentary sweet Red wine and odd shaped ‘balloons’ to play with…we pay for two nights (hourly rates are available)…transfer bike bags into spacious room marble floor palace of kitch (its actually great in all its sparkles and velour)…quickly the basics: charge cameras, nooks, ipad…PC keyboard Korean to english…download Google Chrome…clothes wash…hang to dry stairwell…dry underwear in room…
…Sam Joe excess energy, not used to being indoors so start annoying one another…then start annoying parents…manage 30minutes indoors before hitting the streets…lots of ‘clubs’ in neighbourhood…lots of BUY BUY BUY shops…no supermarkets…Sam’s efforts learning to read Korean useful he finds only vegetarian restaurant in sea of BBQ (we’ve seen the intensive farming so NO) and live fish joints (boys not so keen)…enjoy vegetarian Bibimbap…walk home pavement dodging Big Black Tinted Window cars and well dressed couples…boys watch Home Alone 2 youtube on giant screen (much giggling)…Heidi and Brad sample free wine…pour down sink…Brad goes to shops to buy expensive wine…
Tommorow rain forecast…plan to explore a bit of Daegu

Dedicated cycle lane
